Explore Website DevelopmentWhat are UTM parameters — and why campaigns fail without them
UTM parameters are short tags added to a URL that tell Google Analytics exactly where a visitor came from. Without them, most of your marketing lands in "Direct" traffic and you can't tell whether the boost came from the Facebook ad, the newsletter or the QR code on the poster. With them, every rupee of ad spend is accountable.
| Parameter | Answers | Example |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Where from? | facebook, google, newsletter, tiktok |
| utm_medium | What kind of channel? | cpc, social, email, qr |
| utm_campaign | Which campaign? | dashain-sale-2026, launch |
| utm_term | Which keyword? (paid search) | web-developer-nepal |
| utm_content | Which variant? | video-ad, blue-button, story |
Naming conventions that keep your analytics clean
UTMs are case-sensitive: Facebook, facebook and FBbecome three different sources in your reports. Pick one convention and never deviate — lowercase everything, hyphens instead of spaces, and a consistent vocabulary for mediums (Google's own standard: GA4 traffic source docs ↗). Two more rules: never put UTMs on internal links (it resets the visitor's real source), and shorten ugly campaign URLs before printing them on a poster — pair this builder with the QR Code Generator for print campaigns you can actually measure.
Tracking is only half — the landing page does the converting
Perfect UTMs pointing at a slow or unconvincing page just measure failure more precisely. Before spending on ads, check the landing page with the Website Speed Checker and make sure the page loads fast and pushes one clear action. Building landing pages that convert paid traffic — and wiring up the analytics to prove it — is part of my web development service in Nepal and SEO service.
Track every click. Convert more of them.
I build fast landing pages, set up GA4 tracking correctly and run the technical SEO that turns campaign traffic into clients — for businesses in Nepal and worldwide.
Frequently asked questions
+What is the difference between utm_source and utm_medium?
utm_source is the specific site or platform the click came from (facebook, google, newsletter). utm_medium is the type of channel (social, cpc, email, qr). Together they read like a sentence: traffic from source facebook via medium social.
+Do UTM parameters affect SEO?
They can, if misused — UTM versions of a URL are technically different URLs, so if they get shared and indexed they could split ranking signals. Use UTMs only on links in ads, emails and posts (never internal navigation) and keep a canonical tag on your pages, and there's no SEO downside.
+Should UTM parameters be lowercase?
Yes, always. UTMs are case-sensitive, so 'Facebook' and 'facebook' show up as two different sources in Google Analytics and split your data. Lowercase everything and use hyphens instead of spaces — this builder normalises slugs for you.
+Where do I see UTM data in Google Analytics 4?
In GA4 go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, and change the primary dimension to 'Session source/medium' or 'Session campaign'. Data appears within a few hours of clicks arriving. UTMs work with any analytics tool, not just GA4.
+Should I use UTM links on QR codes and print materials?
Absolutely — it's the only way to measure print. Create a UTM link with source like 'poster' or 'menu' and medium 'qr', generate a QR code from the final URL, and your analytics will show exactly how many people scanned each placement.
