What skipping maintenance actually costs: a composite story

It always unfolds the same way. Month 1: a plugin update is ignored. Month 4: the site is quietly injected with spam links — nobody notices, but Google does, and rankings start sliding. Month 7: customers mention the site "looks weird on mobile"; a PHP upgrade broke the theme. Month 9: Chrome shows a red warning, email from the domain lands in spam, and the business finally calls a developer — who now has to clean malware, rebuild the theme, resubmit to Google, and explain that the old backups lived on the hacked server. Total bill: more than three years of the maintenance plan that would have prevented all of it — before counting the customers who saw the red screen.

WordPress vs custom sites: different maintenance loads

WordPress needs the most care — its popularity makes it the biggest target, and its plugin ecosystem is both its power and its attack surface. Custom-built and Next.js sites need far less (smaller attack surface, fewer moving parts) but not zero: dependencies, hosting platforms and integrations still evolve. Factor this into platform choice — the cheaper build isn't always the cheaper website.
