Quick answer: your website needs a redesign when it is slow on mobile, looks dated beside competitors, no longer brings enquiries, cannot be updated without a developer, or fails on security and Core Web Vitals. In Nepal, a refresh costs roughly NPR 15,000 to 40,000, a full redesign NPR 40,000 to 1,20,000, and a rebuild on a new platform NPR 80,000 to 3,00,000. The part most business owners never hear: a redesign done carelessly can lose the Google rankings you spent years earning, and this article includes the checklist that prevents it.
I am Aryan Pariyar, and rebuilding tired websites is a large part of what I do. I will also tell you when not to redesign, because sometimes the honest answer is that your site is fine and your problem is elsewhere.
First, the uncomfortable research
Visitors judge fast. A widely cited study by Lindgaard and colleagues found people form an impression of a web page in about 50 milliseconds, and Stanford's Web Credibility Research found that people evaluate the trustworthiness of an organisation substantially on the design of its site. In practical terms, a dated website makes a competent business look careless before a single word is read. That is the cost that never appears on any invoice.
The 10 signs, and how to check each one yourself
1. It is slow on mobile data
Run your homepage through my free website speed checker on the mobile setting. Under 50 is a serious problem, 50 to 89 needs work, 90 and above is healthy. Speed is a confirmed Google ranking factor and the most common failure I find. Causes are listed in why websites in Nepal load slowly.
2. It looks broken on a phone
Open every important page on your own phone, on mobile data rather than wifi. Tiny text, sideways scrolling, buttons too close together and menus that will not open are all disqualifying in a market where most visitors are on phones.
3. Enquiries fell while traffic did not
If analytics show steady visitors but fewer calls and form submissions, the problem is the page, not the marketing. Something in the layout, the copy or the trust signals stopped working.
4. You cannot update it yourself
If changing a price or adding a photo requires paying someone, the site is a liability. Content that nobody can update goes stale, and stale sites lose rankings quietly.
5. It looks older than your competitors
Open your site and three competitors side by side on the same screen. This test is brutal and instantly clear. Design conventions move, and a site built in 2018 announces its age.
6. It does not reflect what you sell now
Businesses change faster than their websites. If your best service is missing, or your old positioning is still front and centre, the site is actively misdirecting customers.
7. Security warnings or no padlock
No SSL certificate, browser warnings, or an outdated content management system with known vulnerabilities. This is urgent rather than cosmetic, and it connects to maintenance.
8. Nothing has been updated in two years
Old copyright dates, expired offers, staff who left, blog posts that stop abruptly. Visitors read these as signs that the business may not still be operating.
9. It does not appear on Google for your own services
Search your main service plus your city. If competitors appear and you do not, the site is invisible where it matters, which is usually structural rather than cosmetic.
10. You avoid sending people to it
The most honest signal of all. If you would rather send a customer to your Facebook page than your website, you already know the answer.
Refresh, redesign or rebuild?
Most people say redesign when they mean one of three different projects with very different prices.
| Refresh | Redesign | Rebuild | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What changes | Colours, fonts, images, some copy | Layout, structure, pages, design system | Platform, code, everything underneath |
| Typical cost in Nepal | NPR 15,000 to 40,000 | NPR 40,000 to 1,20,000 | NPR 80,000 to 3,00,000 |
| Timeline | 3 to 7 days | 2 to 4 weeks | 4 to 8 weeks |
| Right when | The site works, it just looks tired | Structure and conversion are the problem | Platform is obsolete or unfixable |
An audit tells you which one you need, usually within a day. Paying for a rebuild when a refresh would do is the most common overspend I see, and I will say so when that is the case. Broader pricing context is in website development cost in Nepal.
The part nobody warns you about: keeping your rankings
This is where redesigns go wrong, and it is entirely preventable. A new site launched carelessly can lose most of its search traffic overnight, because Google treats changed URLs as missing pages and lost content as lost relevance. Insist on this checklist before launch.
- Full backup of the old site, files and database, stored somewhere other than the server.
- A URL map. Every old page address listed beside its new address, with a 301 redirect for each one that changes. Missing redirects are the single biggest cause of traffic loss.
- Keep the pages that rank. Check Search Console for your top pages and preserve their content, headings and URLs rather than merging them into something new.
- Preserve titles and descriptions for pages that already perform. Rewrite the weak ones only. My meta tag generator helps here.
- Rebuild on staging, not live. The new site should be tested on a private URL, blocked from search engines, then switched over in one move.
- Launch faster than before. Compare speed scores on the old and new site. A prettier but slower site is a downgrade.
- Resubmit the sitemap in Search Console immediately after launch, and watch coverage errors for two weeks.
- Test every form and payment path after launch, not before.
Any developer who cannot talk you through this list has not planned your redesign, they have planned your new homepage.
What to prepare before you hire anyone
- Your one sentence goal. What should a visitor do?
- Three websites you like, and one sentence each on why.
- Your content. Text, photos, prices, team details. This is what delays projects.
- Your Search Console access, so whoever rebuilds can see which pages must be protected.
- A list of what currently works. Do not throw away the parts that already bring enquiries.
When not to redesign
Sometimes the website is not the problem. If your traffic is very low, a redesign makes a prettier site that nobody visits, and the money is better spent on SEO, your Google Business Profile or advertising. If enquiries come in but do not convert into sales, the issue may be in your follow up rather than your pages. A good developer will tell you this before taking your money, and I would rather send you away with a working diagnosis than sell you a rebuild you did not need.
Frequently asked questions
Can I redesign in stages instead of all at once?
Yes, and for larger sites it is often smarter. Start with the pages that carry the most traffic and revenue, prove the new design converts, then roll it across the rest.
Will my content transfer to the new site?
Yes. Text, images and posts migrate. What changes is presentation and structure. Insist on a backup first, always.
Should I change platform while redesigning?
Only if the current platform is genuinely the problem. Changing platform and design at once increases risk and cost, so if WordPress is serving you well, a redesign on WordPress is usually the calmer choice. The comparison is in WordPress vs Next.js.
How do I know the redesign worked?
Agree the measures before starting: mobile speed score, enquiries per month, bounce rate, and rankings for your main terms. Compare at 30 and 90 days. Without numbers agreed upfront, everyone argues about taste instead.
Can you audit my current website?
Yes, free. Send me your URL and within 24 hours you will get an honest assessment of whether you need a refresh, a redesign, a rebuild or none of the above, with the reasoning and a fixed price for whichever it is.
A website is a shop front that never closes. If yours is telling customers you stopped paying attention, that message is expensive. Get an honest audit first.
